    Home NAS and More

I am a bit tired of having storage across multiple computers (then I have to keep them all powered on if I want full access), so I decided to go out and search for home NAS (Network Attached Storage) solution.

I quickly narrowed down to DNS-323 made by D-Link and NAS200 (made by Linksys), then, because of the widely available of hacks on DNS-323 (to turn it into a Linux box), I went out and bought DNS-323 with 2 SATA hard drives, 1 Terabyte each, so now I am in Terabyte age, yeah!!!

Setup the NAS with out-of-the-box functions are easy (disk RAID, FTP), but the real fun part is in the hacking. So far I have done:

    1. telnet with fun_plug
    2. setup SSH and deactivate telnet
    3. setup web server with Lighttpd package, plus PHP support

    Need to work on:

    1. BitTorrent
    2. eDonkey

    DNS-323

2/3 Update: Both BitTorrent and eDonkey are now working. For BitTorrent, I used D-LINK version of binary, while for eDonkey I used MLDonkey (http://www.shadowandy.net/2009/01/mldonkey-297.htm). It took me a while to successfully configure MLDonkey, because the default port 6881 happens to be occupied by DLINK version of BitTorrent, but once that's discovered, the fix is easy.

The whole hack process was fun, it reminds me my old days with Linux.

    2/4 Update:

I added web interface to MLDonkey (original 原创) so I can remotely access MLDonkey on DNS-323 from anywhere on internet and initiate download (totally get away from PCs)

    2/6 Update:

    1. Enabled SSH tunnel (through my router) into that box so I am in full control of it without any home PC when I am away from home. I have found it very useful that I can move files to none-shared folder in MLDonkey after the download completes, for obvious reason.

    2. upgraded the network in my study room from 100M to Gigabit Ethernet, to take the full advantage of Gigabit port on DNS-323

    ssh

    2/10 Update:

Upgraded NIC on main desktop and laptop to 1Gigabit so now I have 3 computers interconnected at giga speed

    3/15 Update:

Installed and configured TwonkyMedia server 4.4.11 (specific for DNS-323). With that, I am now able to use my PS3 to play media files (video, audio, and photos) on DNS-323. Although the XBMC running on my old XBOX handles media files very well (see my old blog post http://home.pdafans.com/space.php?uid=171206&do=blog&id=4976) and talks to SMB with no problem, PS3 is much more powerful media player and should be the choice for future high definition, high density video files  (Blu-ray), that’ll be a separate post once I figure out all details with TwonkyMedia.

    3/17 Update:

Now NAS is my central file server, I didn’t discard my old PC-based file server which has a decent amount of spaces (a couple of hundred Gigabyte) on its IDE-based hard drive. So I installed a backup software called SecondCopy to backup my important files from NAS to that old box weekly.

You may say, hey, DNS-323 has the function of RAID-0 so why don’t you set up a mirror so you have a copy always available on that device? Remember, mirror, or RAID-0 is for redundancy, not backup. It is always safe to have a backup, especially offsite, for your important documents.

Twitter - ZT

    http://www.caozenghui.cn/archives/325.html

    4,即时表达你的信息和想法(what are you doing?),Twitter的本质。

T-Mobile G1 is out, now what?

Much buzz about T-mobile's new release of 3G phone called G1 in the last couple of days.

A head-to-head comparison of G1 with AT&T/Apple's iPhone can be found here:

With so many reviews around, I am not going to do another one. Just summarize based on my personal usage perference.

    Great features:
    1. Open-source OS (Android), which means I can mess with it to explore new stuff, really cool for developers
    2. GPS and GMap Street view
    3. 3G data plan at moderate price $25, which is $5 more than my current EDGE plan, but it comes with 400 free sms.
    4. full function browser

Missing features that I use daily on my current Windows Mobile phone:

    1. NO support to Microsoft Exchange, which means I can't access corporate emails and calendars.(ack!)
    2. IM only supports Gtalk for now, but I guess support for other IM's will come out soon.
    3. not enough applications available, not to mention freebies.
    4. still no turn-by-turn navigation (don't know why)

My choice: I am likely to pick up one, but not sure if that ends up being my primary phone.

Mobile Outlook, pushed via Microsoft Exchange 2003 server
    • 个人电子邮件: hotmail by Mobile Outlook, and gmail by mobile explorer
    • Instant Messaging: 以前用Windows Live Messenger,只能用MSN,现在用了IMOV (mobile version of Jabber),可以同时用MSN和Yahoo
    • ListPro:管理项目和各种清单等,我的GTD(如果你知道GTD是什么的话)

    • Microsoft Live Search
    • Google Map,
    mda

    Upgraded eWallet to 6.1

I have been using eWallet for quite some time. It is one of my favorite applications on Windows Mobile and I almost use it daily, on both PC and mobile phone.

Today I upgraded it to the latest version 6.1, and I immediately like the following 2 features in this version:

    1. phone numbers are mobile-hyperlinkable, meaning on mobile phone you can just click the number and it will dial out for you.
    2. any type of fields is customizable, they can be renamed, change type, etc.

of course, I also like the additional icon pack (http://www.iliumsoft.com/site/ew/ew_icons.php) that comes with 6.1

    Mobile Messenger and Search

Today I spent some time exploring a few new mobile applications that I have been looking for. My phone is T-Mobile MDA (HTC) running Windows Mobile 5, with Edge data plan.

    1. Mobile Instant Messenger (IM): There is Built-in MSN messenger in WM5, however I mainly use Yahoo Messenter. So I looked at 2 cross-platform IM mobile applications: IMOV and Palringo. Both combine several popular IM protocols such as Yahoo and MSN and AIM, Palringo even includes GTalk. IMOV is actually the mobile version of the popular desktop IM application Jabber. Since I use Jabber on my computers, so I picked IMOV.

After using IMOV for a few days now, I really like its online-all-the-time feature. When it is running on my mobile phone, it keeps the EDGE connection constantly on, so I don't have to worry about becomeing disconnected after long period of idle. Also, since the Jabber accommodates MSN services, it constantly checking my hotmail email box and sends notification when new mails arrive. Wonderful!

    imov

    2. Mobile Local Search: lately there are 3 players in this competitive market: Google Map, Yahoo! Go, and Windows Mobile Live. I have Google Map installed before, so I reseached on Yahoo! Go and Mobile Live today.
Yahoo! Go: UI is impressive, basically includes all you have in Yahoo! Toolbar (emails, stock portfolio, news, sports), but Yahoo IM is still not integrated (see IM above) which is a bit disappointing. Installation can only use internal memory.
Mobile Live: compact and impressive, especially its voice-recognition in keywords search and support GPS position (knows where to start search), can use storage card member which is much better. I have to give Microsoft credit for its development of Mobile Live, it is a clear winner to Yahoo! Go.

Email Client Changed From Live Email Back to Outlook Express

Call me an old-timer, but I have finally changed my email client from Live Email back to the good old Outlook Express (OE).

I was almost forced into Live Email because of Microsoft's announcement earlier this year that they are discontinuing OE support of DAV protocol to access Hotmail. While I generally use web or mobile device to access my hotmail, I still have a POP3 account (from my ISP) and my gmail to take care of and I like to have one power client to be able to access all 3 emails.

Live Email turned out to be a bit disappointing, for the following reasons based my experience:
    1. slow and clumsy
    2. uses a lot of system resources, which is typical of Microsoft "do less with more"
    3. folder views are weird, especially for gmail's IMAP
    4. I have some emails deleted in gmail but keep showing up in "Unread emails" and there is no way for me to remove them (error msg: "mail handler not found")

While there are some nice features in Live Mail, such as integration with Live Space and Anti-spam, with Microsoft extending the deadline for OE to support Hotmail, I am happy to be back to OE now.

Closed Captioning

Life is now much easier and I am now more productive.

    Microblog with Twitter

    According to Wikipedia:

Micro-blogging is a form of blogging that allows users to write brief text updates (usually less than 200 characters) and publish them, either to be viewed by anyone or by a restricted group which can be chosen by the user. These messages can be submitted by a variety of means, including text messaging, instant messaging, email, MP3 or the web.

The most popular service is called Twitter, which was launched in July 2006 and won the Web Award in the blog category at the 2007 South by Southwest Conference in Austin, Texas.[1] The main competitor to Twitter is Jaiku.

I added Twitter badge to my space so I can get my latest update. I update Twitter mostly with my phone.

Fax Modem
